Okay, here's a question. House elves aren't supposed to be able to go anywhere without their master's permission, correct? So then, how was Dobby able to give Harry those vague warnings in CoS without his master's permission?
My theory is that he didn't.
I think Lucius Malfoy gave Dobby permission to go and warn Harry not to come to Hogwarts. Why would he do this? It's got everything to do with a certain diary. He knew what the diary was about. He's probably had it for awhile. Tom Riddle Sr.'s home is owned by someone who's wealthy but never seems to come around. Malfoy bought the entire Slytherin Quidditch team Nimbus 2001s to get his son on the team. Any guesses as to who that owner is? He had the diary, DD warned him about more of Voldemort's possessions entering the school...seems like Voldemort trusted Malfoy with that stuff. Voldemort also probably thought ahead to just on the offchance something happens, this diary is a backup for him to return, especially after hearing the prophecy. I'm not saying he was scared, just that he wasn't stupid. Malfoy knew what he was doing. He was hoping the diary would enable his master's return.
He chose Ginny Weasley, the most likely of any of the Weasleys to write in a diary, to be his victim. He hates her father, a disgrace to the name of wizard in his opinion, who is trying to get a muggle protection act passed, which Malfoy doesn't want. It would be rather embarrassing for Arthur if his own child was discovered attacking muggle-borns. The act would probably not pass.
So what does any of this have to do with Dobby? Well, Malfoy knows about Quirrell's thwarted attempt at bringing his master back, thwarted by Harry Potter. Does anyone think that Malfoy wanted Harry at school that year to figure out what Malfoy was up to? Malfoy had to be careful, however; his social position was extremely valuable to him. This is why he gave Dobby permission to go and warn Harry not to come to Hogwarts. Of course, Dobby wanted to warn Harry for his own reasons. He wanted Harry to be safe because unlike his current masters, he has high respect for Harry. Malfoy wouldn't care what the elf told Harry to get him away from Hogwarts as long as Dobby didn't give away any of his plans.
I do wonder, however, how long the Malfoys have had Dobby. Maybe, say, 11 years or so? Perhaps the Potters were Dobby's former masters. Harry sure does have a large inheritance. They were probably wealthy enough to own a house elf. Malfoy could have been there that night at Godric's Hollow and taken Dobby for his own family. There are many reasons why Dobby hasn't spoken up if this is true. He could have been forbidden by the Malfoys to speak of that time to anyone, and he is still adjusting to his new freedom as of book 4. It's the first time we've seen him talk bad about the Malfoys. Maybe before it's all over he'll tell everything he knows...WOW! *goes to book 6 thread*
