This chapter, according to JKR's website, has been 13 years in the brewing. She started writing HP 13 years ago, and her mother died about 13 years ago. She says elsewhere she has numerous first drafts of Chapter One, Book One with Voldemort attacking the Potters. I think this is the chapter she could have used in book one, book three, maybe book five, but finally it now works.
I think I've figured out a way to have the events at Godric's Hollow revealed. What if the Potters had a house elf? No one's mentioned it, but no one's said they didn't have one, either, and Harry does have a large inheritance. Now let's see, which house elf do we know who has a particular interest in Harry and his well-being and feels a certain unexplainable loyalty to him? Is anyone having problems answering this question? Didn't think so. Yes, that's right. I'm talking about Dobby.
Yes, I know, Dobby was the Malfoy's servant, but we don't know how long he served them. Yes, house elves are bound to serve one house, but what's a house elf to do when the last remaining member of that house is a baby who's sent to live with Muggles?
Malfoy could easily have been there that night at Godric's Hollow and taken Dobby for himself. One can always use another house elf, right? And he could forbid him to speak of those events to anyone, much like Kreacher was forbidden to speak of what went on at HQ. Of course, Dobby is loving his new freedom, though he's still adjusting to it. Case in point: look how long it took him to admit to having served bad wizards?
There's never been need for him to speak of that night up to this point, at least, not since we found him again in book 4. He's not been privy to the same information he was as the Malfoy's house elf, so he wouldn't know anything about a plot for Voldemort's return, and Dobby didn't really show up much in book 5, if I recall. It's time for him to make a reappearance.
What if Dobby knows something about that night, something that Harry must know about from the start of book 6, like a warning about someone we don't know was there that night but will make their first appearance in this book or, well, just...something, so he comes to warn Harry about it (not warning him to stay away from Hogwarts, though, like in book 2), and Harry asks him what he knows and eventually convinces Dobby to tell him everything, so we get the Godric Hollow's events from the perspective of their former house elf!
What do yall think?
